Inkscape from inkscape.org is a vector-based manipulation program. It is the free equivalent of Adobe Illustrator. Inkscape is one of the more popular open-source programs online for vector image manipulation. Inkscape offers many advanced SVG file options. It also allows for image tracing as well as complex path operations. Inkscape supports a wide array of tools involving text and vector lines. It supports superscript, subscript line spacing, letter spacing, kerning, rotation, and many more devices which are found in the more professional illustration programs by Adobe. Inkscape can also handle advanced complex vector objects and support highly complex shapes. Another feature is the placement of text upon a path. Inkscape can render highly complex objects with anti-aliasing. In digital signal processing, spatial anti-aliasing is the technique of minimizing the distortion artifacts known as aliasing when representing a high-resolution image at a lower resolution. Inkscape supports transparency and can export images as PNG files. I have personally found this program to have the quality necessary to rival the capabilities of Adobe Illustrator.
