There are many different types of software available, both free and paid, to assist you in designing your parts. Some, like Autodesk Tinkercad, have very easy learning curves, while others, like FreeCAD, take a bit longer to learn and have steeper learning curves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regardless of the software being used, the most important thing is to accurately identify the object you&#8217;re trying to duplicate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In my case, I was making a duplicate of the battery lid cover on the back of my mouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1000\" height=\"625\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rodneysgraphics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/img_002-edited.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-454\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rodneysgraphics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/img_002-edited.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/www.rodneysgraphics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/img_002-edited-300x188.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rodneysgraphics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/img_002-edited-768x480.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Measure your 3D part with calipers to get the most accurate 3D measurement&#8217;s.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For tasks like this, you need to take accurate measurements, preferably using a caliper. Calipers come in a wide variety. I am using a digital caliper, but there are also manual calipers that require reading a dial to determine the measurements of what you&#8217;re measuring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are pros and cons to using digital versus dial calipers. Digital calipers obviously use batteries, commonly 2032 coin batteries. Dial calipers do not need batteries but can be a bit harder to read and lack some of the functionality of digital calipers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you get the measurements of the part you&#8217;re trying to duplicate, input them into your favorite CAD software. In my case, I\u2019m using FreeCAD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rodneysgraphics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/img_005-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-455\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rodneysgraphics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/img_005-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.rodneysgraphics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/img_005-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rodneysgraphics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/img_005-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.rodneysgraphics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/img_005.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Try to get the dimensions as close as possible, as even a fraction of a millimeter off can make it so the part will not fit. Different CAD software will create the part differently.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once it is finished, make sure to design your 3D models so they are not too thin and won\u2019t snap off when used.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rodneysgraphics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/img_006-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-456\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rodneysgraphics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/img_006-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.rodneysgraphics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/img_006-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rodneysgraphics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/img_006-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.rodneysgraphics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/img_006.jpg 1152w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To prepare for printing, I use my Kingroon KP3S printer. The slicer I use is the standard Cura Slicer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Using Cura 5.7.1, export the G-code. The G-code contains the instructions for the 3D printer to create the part.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the file is exported, it is sent to the printer, sometimes using an SD card or over USB.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Standard print settings for PLA are normally around 200\u00b0C for the hot end and 60\u00b0C for the build plate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rodneysgraphics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/img_008-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-457\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.rodneysgraphics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/img_008-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.rodneysgraphics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/img_008-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.rodneysgraphics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/img_008-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.rodneysgraphics.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/img_008.jpg 1152w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>While printing, please be careful not to touch the hot end, as it can burn you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After the print is finished, remove it from the plate and clean off any residual elephant foot or brim using a brim cutter.
